A Bit about Chin Implants

Chin augmentation or chin implant is a cosmetic procedure that is done to help enhance the overall look and forward projection of the lower face. It is recommended that only adults consider doing this procedure since as you grow older the face bones will change and shift.
Chin implants are made from synthetic materials such as silicone. It is usually attached to the bone with titanium screws or suture. To put in the implant, the bone in the lower portion of the face is accessed by doing a small incision that is made in the crease of the skin. This kind of corrective enhancement on the face has been done over the last 40 years and the technique used in the operation has remained almost the same.
The surgery in chin augmentation is done on the bone of the chin that increases the projection of the button in the chin area. This style of surgery is done in an augmentation style that covers the width of the anterior area of the chin. The chin implant that you would like to do would be determined by the amount of change that you would like to take shape in the lower jaw line and the soft tissues that are overlying in the chin area.
The Anatomical kind of chin implants has extended ’wings'on the side from the central button area that can wrap around the chin in a better manner. There are many variations that are available in this kind of chin implants that would help change the thickness in order to enhance the external look or appearance of the chin.
The best chin implant style for a patient can be determined with the help of a photographic or visual analysis of the chin followed by computer imaging of the different styles of implants that can be done to best suit the change that you would like to see. The size of the chin implant is best determined by taking measurements on a photograph that is 1:1 or on a lateral cephalometric x-ray and that is taken with a side view.
